Freud and Gestalt therapy

Well. I'm onto another class. Communication and Interviewing Techniques. But it is not what it sounds like. It is about counseling and therapy techniques...interviewing in the other sense of the word. It is interesting so far. But, a little strange. The last assignment I had to do was to interpret a dream from a Freudian perspective. You know what that means boys and girls. Sex. First of all, ew...second of all, ew that I had to basically think of how everything in the dream was related to sexual something or other in some way or another. And then submit it to my teacher! The dream (provided in the assignment) was about a person on a train who couldn't find a seat, and then the train goes into a long dark tunnel in a mountain. The person is anxious and "excited" or whatever when that happens, and everything is all good when the train emerges. There's a little more too. It was just very strange for me to have to write to my teacher how the dark mountain tunnel was supposed to be a vagina, etc.

Oh well...I got over it. However, the assignment I just completed today was also a little weird. I had to write a Gestalt dialogue. Basically, I had to write out a conversation between me and a parent and then write about my feelings as I did the dialogue. I did it and it was a little weird and personal. This is a very personal class. I guess because it is about counseling and such. Luckily, I'm not getting the degree to learn to be a therapist. Behavioral sciences is just one of the concentrations of my Interdisciplinary Studies degree.

You know, when you consider that food is a more basic need than sex, I kind of wonder if Freud had it wrong about the focus of our dreams. Perhaps dream symbolism is really about food.

Perhaps the train was a pan of lasagna, about to be put in the oven. :-)

It's just like literature and taking a Freudian approach. Anything pointy and hollow...well, you can figure out the rest.
