In my opinion of course. This article about the NCAA discussess how select colleges will be banned from having mascots that are "hostile or abusive" in terms of Native Americans or displaying the symbols or logos during the post season only. It's great that they did this, but not every school with the related mascots are affected and it doens't address the regular season.
I agree with the president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media that it was only halfway to where it should have been. I think it is absolutely horrendous for schools and professional sports teams to have any mascots, names, or logos that are at all related to the American Indians. They are a living people. These are not Trojans or Vikings from way back in the day (then again, I don't really know if there are really people who identify with those names, but I don't think so). These people exist!! There is a Seminoles team, and there are currently Seminole Indians walking this earth. You should not have someone's race as your mascot. Some are worse than others.
The Washington Redskins may have a decent looking drawing of an Indian for their logo, but their name is a racial slur. That is completely unacceptable. If anyone tried to have a team called the Honkeys, the Blackies, the Spics, the Wetbacks, the Towel Heads, the Chinks...IT WOULDN'T LAST 2 SECONDS!!! Why the hell is Redskins okay? Because there are less American Indians out there than the other races (because they were wiped out by settlers)??
And the mascot for the Cleveland Indians...it is absolutely disgusting. A bright red face with big white smiling teeth. You just try to slip in a Blackface/Sambo charicature or an exaggerated Asian face with really squinted and slanted eyes in any industry and you'd get smacked down. But "Chief Wahoo" is okay?? You have got to be kidding. I have yet to really investigate how on earth that has been allowed to continue, but I would love to know what judge or governing body thought it was okay and why.
Apparently it is worth it to change the Bullets to the Wizards so as not to promote violence in DC, but its okay to promote intolerance for a race that has already been crapped on enough while at the same time promoting tolerance for prejudice. And I don't give two shits how many American Indians you accept into your college. That has absolutely no bearing on whether it is okay to have something as your mascot. Just because you are not prejudiced in one area does not mean it is okay to be idiotic in another area.
Anyway, I am extremely angered by this topic, so I'm going to stop.

It's a move in the right direction. Hopefully this is just the beginning of the end for the use of Native Americans as mascots.
